What If Nothing Is Wrong With You?
Night Is Normal Part 1: What If Nothing Is Wrong With You?
In this opening episode of a new series inspired by Alicia Britt Chole’s The Night Is Normal, Diana begins an honest conversation about difficult seasons of faith, spiritual exhaustion, and the quiet questions many believers carry but rarely voice.
What happens when faith doesn’t feel the way we thought it would?
Together, we explore Psalm 23, trusting God in the valleys, learning to stand strong even when we do not feel strong, and discovering that night seasons are not proof that something is wrong with us—they may actually be part of the journey God is using to deepen our faith.
If you’ve ever wondered: “Why does everyone else seem okay except me?”
Then this episode is for you. Please tune in now!
Diana’s Notes
Hello everybody, and welcome back to another episode of Heartfelt Conversations with Diana. This is our first episode in a series based on the study of Dr. Alicia Britt Chole’s book The Night Is Normal.
Dr. Chole came to a women’s conference we had at Valley, and everyone was so moved and touched by the healing her God-anointed words brought. So my small group decided to go through her The Night Is Normal workbook.
And our first class is on the theme of What if Nothing is Wrong With You?
Because I think we have all probably thought this at one time or another - What is wrong with me!
Over the next several weeks, I would like to do something a bit different during our time together.
As a part of my own personal journey, I am going to be sharing thoughts and bible verses and just having our conversations around a topic that my small group from church and I are beginning.
We are a group of women who come from every walk of life and from every age, and we have all at one time in our lives wondered that very question: Is there something wrong with me?
And even though this group is specific to the nurturing relationship between women, what we study and share and discover is founded on the word of God, so that it is beneficial for all who hear it!
2 Timothy 3:16(NLT)All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.
God’s word teaches us what is true. The truth can vary when it relies on human interpretation because, after all, we are human. Pastor Eric, in his message this past week, referred to it as the “human condition”.
Our perspective, or what we call “our truth,” is often skewed by our circumstances and past experiences.
God’s truth is founded on Himself. He is, in fact, the Creator of the heavens and the earth.
Before God spoke it into being, nothing had a form or a shape. When we are confused by life, we need to remember it is because we live surrounded by other flawed perspectives - that “human condition”, what we need to learn to do is correct our distracted view and remind ourselves to trust Him. To follow Him by following His Word.
Jesus is the Foundation that we structure our lives on.
Why? Because He is the only source of unchanging strength and salvation. Just as a building requires a firm foundation to survive severe storms, our lives require an anchor that will not shift or collapse when we face the storms, the night seasons of life.
God gave us Jesus to restore us to Him through Salvation, but that couldn’t be the end of it. We still live here in a broken, decaying world. God knew we would need a firm foundation on which to build this new Christian life we are learning to live.
I ran across a quote on a Facebook post by Ken Ham, and it read:
“Therefore, structuring your life on God and His teachings means placing your ultimate trust and moral direction in an unshakeable, eternal source of truth rather than the shifting values of the world.”
Structuring our lives on the Firm Foundation of God’s word, believing and trusting that Jesus is God’s Word made flesh, means that we can be still when we want to run. It is knowing that Jesus faced the same hardships and sorrows and rejections that we do that gives us the strength to climb that mountain when we want to sit down and give up. It means not knowing the answers but trusting our Savior will safely and tenderly lead us even when we can’t find the way.
Simply because… He IS our Firm Foundation
He does have all the answers, and there are seasons when we just may have to let go of knowing everything and trust God to lead us through.
I have a simple prayer that I say under my breath when I am struggling
“Remove it or lead me through it.”
It is a very simplified prayer that reminds me of when Jesus asked His Father to remove the cup of suffering that He was about to bear, but Jesus surrendered His will to His Father’s will.
Matthew 26:38 -39: (NLT) He told them, “My soul is crushed with grief to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.”
Remember, those are the words of Jesus, our Savior and our Shepherd,
The reason we can take such bold confidence is that our circumstances may seem bleak, overwhelming, or too hard to bear. When our soul feels crushed with grief to the point of death, as Jesus Himself struggled with such deep sorrow. His suffering is the very reason we can have bold confidence! We can not because of anything we have done, but because our Savior has already paid our way through. He paid the toll; the gate is open for you to walk safely through, even in the darkest of valleys, but we have to learn to trust Him enough to follow Him. The thing I am beginning to learn is that there are many gates!
And sometimes, at least for me, with each new gate I come to, there seems to be another path that ascends even higher up the mountain.
Not too long ago, I was struggling with something that I asked God to take away, and His response to me can be found in the Old Testament book Habakkuk. I am going to begin with Habakkuk 3:17 through 19.
Habakkuk 3:17-19:(AMP)Though the fig tree does not blossom And there is no fruit on the vines, Though the yield of the olive fails And the fields produce no food, Though the flock is cut off from the fold And there are no cattle in the stalls,
Yet I will [choose to] rejoice in the LORD; I will [choose to] shout in exultation in the [victorious] God of my salvation!
(Habakkuk the prophet was saying no matter how horrible the conditions of his life may seem, how bleak, even with empty cupboards, no money coming in and life feels too difficult to bear, his trust is in His God. He goes on to say.)
The Lord GOD is my strength [my source of courage, my invincible army]; He has made my feet [steady and sure] like hinds’ feet, and makes me walk [forward with spiritual confidence] on my high places [of challenge and responsibility]. For the choir director, on my stringed instruments.
That phrase, For the choir director on my stringed instruments signifies a musical direction indicating that the preceding prayer of praise should be accompanied by stringed instruments.
In other words, this passage is a hymn of faith that declares God as the ultimate source of strength and sure-footedness during times of hardship.
Do you have a “hymn of faith”, a song or chorus, something that stirs in your soul when you need a little boost of strength?
I have found one of the best ways to stop focusing on the battles going on in my life is to get before the Lord in worship.
In fact, if you go to the heartfeltconversations.com website, you will find under the Thirst Quenchers Tab, my playlist of songs.
I will put a link to that tab in today’s notes. You can find the notes on our website under the Blog tab.
No matter what may be going on in your life right now, Jesus will guide you all the way through it, and then, you will be on the other side of it.
Does anyone remember the verse I received last week from John 3:10?
It reads:
John 10:3 (NIV): "The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out".
Don’t give up! If you have traveled this far, then don’t stop now! Keep fighting to hold on. Keep believing the morning will come. God is with you, helping you every step of the way.
Have Bold Expectant Faith because you know your Shepherd’s voice guiding you through that gate.
You do know His Voice, now listen. Be “all ears”, actively listening for your Shepherd’s voice.
God does not want us to be doomy and gloomy!
How can we be His light when our souls are overcast by the storms of life? We must learn to trust Him to get us to the other side. To lead us up and over the mountain if that is what we have to do. Jesus will light our path, and He will guide us safely when we follow Him.
As my group begins to discover that Night Seasons are a normal part of life even as believers, if it's okay with you, I would like to share this part of my walk with Christ with you as well.
So…
What happens when faith doesn’t feel the way we thought it would?
Have you ever looked around and thought: ‘Why does everyone else seem okay… except me?’
Maybe you’ve prayed and still felt confused. Maybe life feels heavy right now. Maybe God feels quiet. Distant.
And somewhere deep inside, a thought starts whispering:
‘Something must be wrong with me.’
Or what I wrestle a lot with is, What did I do wrong? Why is God mad at me?
But what if what we are thinking and feeling isn’t true?”
What if nothing is wrong with you? What if everything you are feeling is very normal! What if that is part of our “human condition?”
“Psalm 23:4 says:
‘Even though I walk through the valley…’
Not if. Even though.
That means valleys are not abnormal in the life of faith. They are part of the journey.”
“So often we think: If I were stronger… more spiritual… had more faith… then I wouldn’t struggle this much.
But maybe the struggle is not proof that your faith is broken.
Maybe it’s proof your faith is growing.” Maybe you are approaching a new gate, and God is preparing you to walk through it.
Maybe He is stretching you, growing you, expanding you, and deepening your roots in Him.
“I think one of the hardest things we wrestle with is expectation. Or at least I know I do.
Sometimes we unknowingly create a picture in our minds of how we think God should move.
How healing should happen. How quickly should answers come? How life should unfold. And when reality doesn’t match our expectations…we begin questioning God.”
Last week, I mentioned that you do not have to feel strong to stand strong. I want to remind us of that again today.
You do not have to feel strong… to stand strong.
Our strength was never meant to come from our emotions. Our willpower
It comes from standing on The Word. Having Expectant Faith. Placing ALL our Trust in God.
1 Corinthians 16:13 (NLT): Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.
How do we stand in our Night seasons? In the valleys of our lives. We stand in faith. Faith in our God. Not our circumstance.
“If you’re walking through a night season right now…I just want to encourage you today:
Nothing is wrong with you. God has not abandoned you. And maybe this season is not the end of your faith story…
Maybe it’s where deeper roots are beginning to grow.”
What if the fact that you are still here…today, this very day, answers the very assurance you needed, to know that He is sustaining you. He has been protecting you this whole time. Maybe more than you realized.
Yes! God Does Love You!
This subject is something important that we all need to begin to understand:
Night seasons are not unfamiliar or foreign in the Christian life.
They are part of the journey.
We need to trust God and have faith that our Father does some of His deepest work in places we would not have chosen.
Father,
For every person listening today who has quietly wondered, ‘What is wrong with me? gently silence their fear.
Holy Spirit, remind us that difficult seasons do not mean our Father has abandoned us, and that the valleys do not mean our faith has failed.
Teach us to trust You even when life feels uncertain. Help us remember that Jesus is our Firm Foundation, even when our emotions feel shaky.
Strengthen all of the weary hearts. Comfort all of the anxious minds. And reassure every listener today, that You are walking with them through every season.
Help us to recognize Your voice above the noise of fear, disappointment, doubt, and disillusionment.
And Lord, if we are standing before a new gate in life, we ask that You give us the courage to keep following You forward.
Thank You for being faithful, steady, patient, generous, and kind.
We ask you these things, Father, in Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.”
“Next week, I want to continue this conversation together because I think one of the hardest questions we wrestle with during difficult seasons is this:
‘Is God punishing me… or preparing me?’
We’re going to talk about Joseph, expectations, disappointments, and how sometimes God is doing a deeper work in us than we can see.
So until next time…
Keep holding on. Keep listening to your Shepherd’s voice. And remember…
Nothing is wrong with you.

Prayer of Salvation
Jesus has given salvation, healing, and countless benefits to all who call upon His name. These benefits can be yours if you receive Him into your heart by saying this prayer:
Heavenly Father, I come to You admitting that I am a sinner. Right now, I choose to turn away from sin, and I ask You to cleanse me of all unrighteousness. I believe that Jesus rose again from the dead so that I may be justified and made righteous through faith in Him. I call upon the name of Jesus Christ to be the Savior and Lord of my life. Jesus, I choose to follow You, and I ask that You fill me with the power of the Holy Spirit. I declare right now that I am a born-again child of God. I am free from sin and full of the righteousness of God. I am saved in Jesus’ name. Amen.
